Eyelash and Eyebrow Transplants in the San Francisco Bay Area
Sara Wasserbauer, MD Walnut Creek, CA
Eyelash transplantation is ideal for patients who are dissatisfied with the fullness of their eyelashes. Hair from the back of their head or upper neck can be transplanted to become new full eyelashes. A patient can have a set of full and healthy eyelashes with an eyelash transplant and it makes an enormous difference in their appearance. An eyelash transplant can be useful for people who have thinning lashes, or for anyone who has lost lashes from trauma, burns, or other accidents. A graft of hair is taken usually from the nape of the neck and divided into very fine single-hair grafts. Once the patient’s eyelid has been anesthetized and a corneal shield placed over the eye, the surgeon will carefully transplant about 50 hairs evenly into the eyelid. Each hair is transplanted one at a time, taking about an hour to complete. Few complications are possible with an eyelash transplant. There is no scarring or downtime and little to no bleeding. Transplanted lashes do grow longer than natural lashes, so there may be a need to trim them occasionally, and some may also need to be artificially curled. Loss of eyebrow oe eyelash hair can make an individual feel very self-conscious about his or her appearance, and new hair transplantation techniques can often restore the hair. You often don't realize the full impact that eyebrows or eyelashes can make on the total facial appearance until you see a person without them. Hair transplantation has been used successfully for many years to fill out patchy or partial eyebrows, to restore absent eyebrows, and even camouflage scars within the eyebrow area. Eyelash transplantation is a more recent procedure. The procedure should be performed by a surgeon who specializes exclusively in surgical hair restoration.
Eyebrow hair loss can occur for several reasons, and is most commonly associated with the following:
Physical trauma.
Systemic or local disease.
Excessive plucking, typically to reshape the eyebrow.
Trichotillomania (TTM), or self-inflicted obsessive compulsive plucking.
Medical or surgical treatments like radiation therapy, chemotherapy.
GeneticsThe procedure for restoring eyebrows and eyelashes involves the individual placement of single hairs in the natural growth pattern of your previous hair. The meticulous placement of as many as several hundred hairs can restore eyebrows and eyelashes to their most natural appearance.
